Some modes in OI can't be used together, and a few quietly switch a third feature off. If a control has vanished on you, this article collects those rules in one place.
What it's for
Insights has several modes that change what the charts show - Compare mode, Merged Compare, Prior Period Comparison, Lens, and Opportunities view - plus Events, Labels and Episodes, which mark up your data.
Some of these are designed to work together, and some fight for the same screen real estate and switch each other off automatically. If a chart, toggle or menu item you expect to see has disappeared, it's usually one of the rules below.
If a control has vanished, this is why
| Turn this on | And you lose |
|---|---|
| Compare mode | Prior Period Comparison, Merged Compare, event markers, the legend, the merge/split toggle, and the metric menu |
| Merged Compare | The Impact chart, and the per-dimension legend (replaced by a group legend) |
| Prior Period | Compare mode, all bar highlighting, the legend, and the merge/split toggle |
| Opportunities view | Lens, the Impact chart, and the Root Causes level |
| Lens | Opportunities view |
| An Episode | Labels |
Two of these are two-way: Compare mode and Prior Period force each other off in both directions, and Opportunities and Lens each block the other. The rest are one-way - for example, an Episode disables Labels, but not the reverse.
What does work together
- Events combine with Labels and with an active Episode.
- Several Labels can be active at once; only one Episode can.
Two things that gate the same controls without being modes themselves
- The Impact chart needs an average-based metric. It's unavailable for Volume, Total Interaction Cost and Hours of Workload, whatever else is turned on.
- The merge/split toggle and the Merged Compare button both need at least one bar selected.
**Note: Not every feature described here is available to everyone. Some depend on how your organisation has set the platform up, and some on your own access - if something on this page doesn't appear for you, that's the likely reason.
